Vania Gonçalves, born in Portugal in 1978, is a ceramic artist based in Lisbon. After working as a dentist in London for 13 years, she discovered her passion for ceramics. Vania honed her craft through experimental ceramics workshops in London and later pursued formal training at Ar.Co – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual in Lisbon upon her return to Portugal.
Vania’s artistic practice is deeply rooted in the themes of movement, change, and transformation. Her abstract sculptures embody the fluidity of identity and existence, merging organic forms with contrasting textures and cascading glazes that evoke a sense of transience and ambiguity. Sharp, well-defined edges juxtapose dense, flowing surfaces, forging new landscapes with each movement. Through this interplay of stillness and motion, materiality and concept, her work becomes both introspective and evocative, inviting viewers to engage with the ever-shifting nature of form and meaning.
In addition to her studio practice, Vania holds regular workshops in Monte Estoril, where participants can develop their skills in a supportive and creative environment. She collaborates with galleries and designers, creating bespoke pieces that bring a contemporary, poetic touch to spaces.
Vania's works have been showcased in galleries and design fairs both in Portugal and internationally, including Lisbon by Design, Dubai Design Week, the Thrown Gallery in London, and the Double J Collective Gallery in Dubai. Her pieces are featured in private collections and public displays, such as the Taguspark Urban Art Museum.
